Adornment in Raphael Paintings

Long gold chain necklaces. Jeweled cauls. Sheer veils. Cabochon gemstone and signet rings. Even pomanders—ornate pendants filled with herbs, ambergris, or spices to wear as perfume. I went to the Raphael show at the Met, and all I could think about was how the women he painted absolutely understood jewelry styling. And the way he painted hands? Divine.
